The Rev. Stanley J. Norman is our Pastor. Our pastoral family, Stan and Sue Norman, joined us on July 1, 2008. Stan and Sue were married in 1971, three days after Stan graduated from the U. S. Coast Guard Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree. During Stan's 22 year Coast Guard career, they raised two boys and moved nine times. Stan's father and Sue's father were both retired Navy veterans.
Their oldest son, Derek, was born in Connecticut in 1974. He and his wife Carrie now reside in Houston, Texas, with the Normans' two grandchildren: David, 7 years old, and Katey, 3 years old. Derek is an operations manager for Caprock Communications and Carrie is an office manager for a real estate firm. Derek is a Navy veteran and Carrie is an Army veteran.
Patrick, the Normans' youngest son, was born in Michigan in 1980. Patrick has managed video game stores, been a server at restaurants, and is a certified casino blackjack dealer. He currently resides at the parsonage with Stan and Sue.
Sue is a very active pastor's spouse, serving on several church teams and committees, and teaching Sunday School. She has worked outside the home most of her life, mostly in the medical field. In addition to being a certified nurse assistant, she was a certified cosmetologist for a number of years, owning and operating her own beauty shop while the Normans were stationed in Michigan. Sue is an avid gardener and bridge player. She is also a gourmet cook. Sue works part-time for an audiologist in Sandpoint.
Pastor Stan served on five ships during his Coast Guard career, commanding an icebreaker and a seagoing buoy tender. He retired in Seattle with the rank of Commander in 1993. In Seattle he served as Chief of Aids to Navigation and Waterways for the 13th Coast Guard District . The 13th District includes the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. From the Coast Guard, Stan went to work for the Washington State Department of Ecology where he served as the State's Oil Spill Prevention Manager. In that capacity, he served as Washington's representative on the Pacific States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force and was appointed by Governor Locke to the Washington State Board of Pilotage Commissioners.
In late 1999, Stan finally answered God's persistent call to become a pastor. During his last five years with the Department of Ecology, he attended Fuller Theological Seminary at night and on weekends, graduating in 2005 with a Master of Divinity degree. The Normans were immediately assigned to the Willapa United Methodist Church in Raymond, Washington, where they served until being reassigned to Sandpoint.
Pastor Stan is normally in his church office, Tuesday through Thursday, 8:30 am to noon, and other times by appointment.
Associate Pastor Gerri Harvill is a Certified Lay Minister (CLM). Although Gerri only recently joined the staff, she and her husband, Tom Harvill, have been members of our church for many years. Gerri has been a certified Lay Speaker for several years, but in 2008 she began to explore her call to a broader pastoral ministry and completed her training as a CLM in May 2009. Gerri was certified as a CLM by the Inland District Committee on Ordained Ministry in July 2009 and immediately appointed to serve the Sandpoint United Methodist Church by the District Superintendent, the Rev. Dale Cockrum. Gerri will focus initially on Christian Education, Worship, and Discipleship.
Pastor Gerri is normally in the office on Tuesday and Thursday, from 9:00 am to noon.
